I’ve always been a watch enthusiast, however, visiting a Shenzhen watch factory last month made me wonder why I’ve been obsessed about watches without a thorough understanding of how the delicate, tiny components are engineered together.
Many watches nowadays come with transparent cases where you can see what’s going on from a glimpse. But nothing beats the joy of visiting a Shenzhen watch factory to experience how watches are made from scratch, how the tiny wheels are connected in the right way, and two number plates ticking into place with impeccable symmetry.
Though the Shenzhen watch factory contracts out few key parts of their timepieces like strap, source several tiny components from downstream suppliers or Huaqiangbei electronics markets, the factory produces millions of watches per year. With clear divisions of roles, designers, cutters, engravers, and finishers are focusing separately on their own works but communicate continuously.
